In 1990, the first African American Read-In was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. In 1991, the National Council of Teachers of English joined in the sponsorship. The Read-In has been endorsed by the International Reading Association. Over a million readers of all ethnic groups, from 50 states, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, and African countries has participated. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.
In order to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month the Library will be hosting an African American Read-In. Simply that means we will bring together students to share a book, poem etc. with their fellow classmates. Students will be able to pick a book, poem etc. written by an African American and share it. We will hold this public reading in the Dennis Tanner Library, on February 16th & 17th. The students who sign up to be readers, for this event, will need to either pick a book in the Library, poem online or create their own writing. Please feel free to use any of the resources listed on this page. All participants will need to provide the piece of literature the week prior to the Read-In date, for approval.
Dennis Tanner Library: Works need to be submitted by Feb. 7th to hfiori@vineland.org.
Directions:
Students who participate will earn up to 8 hours of service learning. If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Fiori, hfiori@vineland.org .
