French Revolution Newspaper Project Guide: Welcome to VHS North and South Libguides

Information for the purpose of creating a Newspaper about the French Revolution.

Project Directions

French Revolution & Napoleon Newspaper 

You are the writers/editors for a French newspaper during the times of the French Revolution and Napoleon (1789-1815). You are to create a newspaper that details, examines, and analyzes these major historical events. You will work on this individually. Please prepare your newspaper on a GooDocs, Google Doc, Word document, or Publisher document (there are a number of great templates). Be creative and professional (100 points)!

Important people: King Louis XVI, Queen Marie-Antoinette, Maximilien Robespierre, Jean-Paul Marat, Georges Danton, Napoleon Bonaparte

Important places/events/concepts: 1st, 2nd, 3rd estates, Estates General, Old Regime, National Assembly, Tennis Court Oath, Declaration of the Rights of Man, Constitution of 1791, Storming of the Bastille, March On Versailles, war with Europe, Battle of Valmy, guillotine, National Convention, Jacobins, Committee of Public Safety, Directory, 1st Consul, Continental system, Napoleonic Code, Battle of Austerlitz/Waterloo, Elba

Your paper must include all of the following:

1) A large title or name for the paper (it can be in French if you choose)

2) At least 4 labeled pictures of French Revolutionary OR Napoleonic leaders, things, maps, or events (each must be different).

3) A titled, factual article on the main events of the French Revolution and/or Napoleon (at least 8 complete sentences, must be your own work, must be typed or written neatly). Please cite any resources you used at the end of this article.

Your paper must also include 3 of the following:

1) Create your own illustrated advertisement (color optional--remember the time period. You may draw this yourself or use a computer program, but this must be created by you) 

2) A titled, factual article on one of the battles of the French Revolutionary or Napoleonic Wars (at least 8 sentences). Examples: Valmy, Trafalgar, Austerlitz, Jena, Ulm, Waterloo, Leipzig, Friedland, Borodino

3) A crossword puzzle with the words/names from the revolution or Napoleonic times (at 

    least ten words—do not fill in the answers). You can find online resources to help.

4) A word search with the words/names from the revolution or Napoleonic times (at least 

    ten words—do not circle the answers). You can find online resources to help. 

5) Create your own labeled political cartoon or short comic strip (color optional—remember this is created by you). Y

6) An obituary of at least 2 people killed during the “Reign of Terror,” including their name, age, why they were killed, and method and date of execution. This information can be made up or looked up at: 

7) A detailed color illustration of any event—label the event (created by you by hand or with a computer program)

8) A titled factual article, or an editorial (an opinion article) about any other aspect of the French Revolution (at least 8 sentences—same format as the other articles)

9) A titled factual article, or an editorial (an opinion article) about Napoleon Bonaparte (at least 8 sentences—same format as the other articles)

10) An interview with an important person from the revolutionary/ Napoleonic era (at 

      least 10 questions and their answers—make up what you think they’d say)

11) An advice column that answers people’s questions about the revolution or Napoleon

 12) Add a quote from a notable person of the revolution.
